Baffle

A device installed in a fireplace or stove to redirect flue gases (usually to help them burn more effectively).

Carbon monoxide

A colourless, odourless, flammable gas produced by burning any type of fuel. A build-up of carbon monoxide can be highly toxic to humans and animals, and can prove fatal.

Chimney cap

A cover that fits over the top of a chimney. It is designed stop moisture, animals and debris getting in, and to minimise wind-induced downdrafts.

Chimney liner

Also known as a flue liner; A metal, clay or ceramic lining, fitted inside a chimney to direct smoke to the outside and protect the chimney walls from heat corrosion.

Damper

A metal plate, set just above the throat in a chimney, that controls the draft and can be closed off when the chimney is not being used.

Firebox

The chamber of a stove in which the fuel is burnt.

Flue liner

Also known as a chimney liner; A metal, clay or ceramic lining, fitted inside a chimney to direct smoke to the outside and protect the chimney walls from heat corrosion.

HVACR

HVACR is an acronym for Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

Mantle

Fireplace mantel or mantelpiece, also known as a chimneypiece, the decorative frame around a fireplace.

Relining

Installing a new flue liner in a chimney. The liner helps direct heat and smoke up the chimney while protecting the overall structure.

Smoke shelf

Also called a wind shelf, a ledge at the bottom of a chamber in the chimney meant to deflect down drafts from coming down the chimney.

Solid fuel

Material that can be burned for heating, such as wood or coal.

Soot

The black powder, made of carbon, left over after a material fails to completely burn.

Stove

Surround

A box constructed on a roof which surrounds the chimney flue, in order to make it more attractive.

Sweep

A person who cleans chimneys, and the act of cleaning them, typically using long brushes.

Thermal expansion

The tendency of materials to expand when heated, which can cause chimney breasts to crack.

Throat

The part of the chimney directly above the stove or fireplace where it narrows, to help improve the flow.

Wood burner

A stove that burns wood and similar materials.
