- Block paving

Also known as brick paving, block paving uses bricks to create a driveway or area of hardstanding.
- Block splitter

Also known as Block Cutters or Guillotines, a tool that allows bricks to be cut along straight lines to shape them for use in block paving.
- Brick saw

A power tool used for cutting concrete, bricks and other materials.
- Brush-in

A paving technique where a tradesperson literally brushes a dry, powdered mortar into the joints of paving.
- Coping

A flat stone used as a cap on walls or around the perimeter of patios, pools and ponds etc.
- Crazy paving

Paving made of irregular pieces of flat stone.
- Edge course

The bricks or paving blocks used at the edge of a pavement, driveway or other area.
- Gravel

A loose mix of small, smooth stones.
- Hardcore

A mix of stones, broken bricks, rubble and other material used as a filling in foundations or under hardstanding.
- Imprinted concrete

Concrete that is pressed to take on a pattern.
- MOT Type 1

A type of easily compacted aggregate used in sub bases. Typically made up of crushed granite, limestone, or clean crushed concrete.
- Permeable paving

Paving made up materials that allows water to soak through.
- Sub-base

The load-bearing layer of pavement or hardstanding, made from crushed stone.
- Sub-grade

The existing ground underneath a planned area of hardstanding, cleared of any obstacles.
- Tarmac
