Detection of fault in electrical system?
I've been told there is a fault in my electrical system - what is the easiest way to detect the fault without pulling up floorboards etc? Is there a meter or a detector or something that you can use on sockets & switches to see where the fault lies?

A multi function installation tester has all the diagnostic test functions required to effectively find a fault. A good tester costs about £1000 and it takes years of training to get the minimum amount of knowledge and expertise to interpret the test results in order to hone in on a hidden fault or identify if it’s a hardware or protective device failure.Even so if it is hidden under a floor it’s usually only possible to work out that the fault is between two points with out lifting the floor and using the most important of all diagnostic tools, the mark 1 human eye. Unfortunately there is no magic wand that will tell you exactly where a fault is hidden which is why you almost certainly need an experienced electrician to fault find for you.

Your best bet would be to consult a competent electrician, they'll be able to test sections of the circuit and should (depending on how your building goes together and assuming there are no inaccessible junction boxes under the floor) be able to locate the offending section of cable or accessory and remove it from service, you may however find that floorboards have to come up to rectify the fault unless you can live with surface wiring in trunking.

我同意第一个两个答案。除非you know exactly what you are doing there is no magic wand fix. Most common faults are generally down to poor wiring or insulation faults. An experienced electrician would be the best call who will have the correct equipment to safely diagnose issues. If you don't know what you're doing, you could make the problem worse or maybe potentially dangerous.

Previous answer is correct apart from there is a meter which will locate where the cable is broken, however this meter can not be used on circuits that are contained in steel containment. Your premises being a domestic premises this meter will find yiur broken cable, if this is the fault however the cable could be numerous things causing the fault and an JIB electrician will be able to determine the exact nature of your electrical fault and safely repair.
