Damp Proofing

Rising damp returning after damp proofing.

I had damp proofing taken place for rising damp. I hired through this website. 6 months later, the plaster is now all cracked in various directions in one room and rising damp is starting to appear in multiple corners. Am I entitled to a refund?

chances are you do not and did not have rising damp, rising damp is very rare misdiagnosed in over 75% of cases rising to 95% in older properties, surprised you never got an insurance backed guarantee will also be surprised if you get a refund.
I have had many damp proof surveyors over the years tell my customers they have rising damp & none of them have. most modern rising damp treatments are designed to cover up & seal in the issue rather than find were the water ingress is getting in and deal with it.
good luck Alex

Hi, I'm sorry you've got these issues.

It would appear Alex jumped in and didn't read your question correctly. I am a damp proofing specialist of 19 years. This is all we do, we don't fit kitchens, lay carpets or anything else.

You advised the plaster is cracking and also rising damp is appearing in various corners of another room. I'm assuming these are all the areas you had a rising damp treatment carried out. Before we start we cannot comment whether you had rising damp initially or not just on what we're left with now .

The plaster can crack for many reasons as it dries out. This can be common for any new plaster.

You also mentioned about rising damp in corners of another room. This is potentially condensation issues which could have been mis diagnosed as rising damp or new issues due to the time of the year.

With reference to fixing the issues the company that carried out the works should have no issues in doing this. If they don't then proceed to go to citizens advice or even the small claims court.

It's a tough one, refund from a surveyor is never easy, but on other hand was the work carried out properly? You mentioned corners of wall well there's an area that is prone to moving a lot. Rising damp will go meter high but it also follows in more than a metre on adjoining internal walls. All about getting a good job done from a decent plasterer damp proofing. They may have also mixed to strong a cement mix and it's cracked as it's shrunk, if the substrate was rotten bricks through damp then they should have been replaced with new brick or blocks, lots of variables to this,
